40% of Japanese men are virgins: Condom maker reveals Japan’s sex habits

We’ve looked at surveys before — from men who never date to the best breasts, habits and the most-viewed Wikipedia pages.

Now Sagami, one of Japan’s leading condom makers, has released the results of a big nationwide survey, Nippon no Sex, it did in January this year.

It surveyed 14,100 men and women online (plus 29,315 in a pre-survey), aged from their twenties to their sixties, and from all of Japan’s forty-seven prefectures.

The results are a little alarming in places, such as that 40.6% of Japanese males are still virgins (as opposed to just 25.5% of women), and that the average age to lose your cherry — presuming you are not one of the 40% — is 20.5 years old.

Number of partners comes out at a reasonable 8.1, but things get more interesting when you start to break them down by area. Okinawans have sex the earliest, at 19.6 years old, while the Kagoshimans have the highest level of sexual satisfaction (Tokyo ranks fortieth!).

Here are the rankings for when men and women lose their virginities, per age group.

Meanwhile, the place with the highest number of sexual partners was Kochi (12.4), followed by Okinawa again (10.1). So it seems the south, either Okinawa, Kyushu or Shikoku, is the place to go! (Here Tokyo fared a bit better, ranking eighth with 9.5 partners.)

Here are the results for number of sexual partners, per age group.

And then per prefecture.

Men masturbate on average 6.5 times per month, as opposed to women’s 0.9 occasions — a huge difference! And the guys doing it the most are those in their twenties, with one result even clocking in at 11.1. This doesn’t seem so high to us! (For your info, cold north prefecture Akita ranked highest here.)

Sex per month was pathetic, just 2.79 times in the highest place (Saga prefecture, again in the south)!

Tokyo has an adultery rate of 25% while Chiba has a 59% rate of people who think they are “sexless”, i.e. lead a life in which sex plays no part.

All in all, it doesn’t look like a lot of fun, does it? Certainly if you don’t live in the south, your sex life is guaranteed to be substantially less interesting.
