Ama female pearl diver moe mascot for Shima City, Mie, “too sexy”
The new official mascot for Shima City in Mie Prefecture is too erotic and has inspired a campaign to get it abolished.
The “ama-moe” character Megu Aoshima eroticizes the ama female free-divers who fish for pearls. Shima is famous for pearl-diving in Ago Bay. It will also host the 2016 G7 Summit, meaning world leaders will get to look on these illustrated hotties.
A petition to get the ama character banned for the way it “denigrates women” will be submitted to the mayor on August 13th. They already have around 170 current ama divers’ signatures.
The city issued an open call for a name for the new mascot in November last year and chose it from around 2,000 candidates.
There are even LINE stamps.
Locals are appalled by the overt sexualization of ama in the mascot design.
