Former politician receives suspended sentence for sexually assaulting 12-year-old girl
A month ago, we wrote about the trial of former House of Representatives member Tamotsu Shiiki underway at Tokyo District Court, accused of sexually assaulting a junior high school first grader in a karaoke parlor in Kabukicho.
Shiiki’s excuse was that he “didn’t ejaculate.” He also tried to claim that he was trying to help the 12-year-old in August last year. “I wanted to do something for her because she was a runaway. She was looking for someone to talk to.” This claim rather falls down when we consider that Shiiki went to buy personal lubricant before taking the student to the karaoke parlor.
On Monday, the trial ended with a conviction for Shiiki, but the sentence has left many people shocked.
He received a three-year prison sentence, suspended for five years.
This is considerably lighter than the five years that prosecutors had sought for the 58-year-old over nonconsensual sexual intercourse.
However, according to news media reports, the court deemed a suspended sentence appropriate because Shiiki had apologized and paid compensation to the victim.
Shiiki served two terms as a lower house lawmaker for the Japan Innovation Party, a conservative populist party. He won his first term in 2012 in Chiba through the proportional representation vote.
The 12-year-old victim was one of the runaways often found loitering near the main plaza in Kabukicho. Dubbed Toyoko kids, they are vulnerable to prostitution, drugs, and crime.
The girl was saved by the quick thinking of the karaoke parlor staff, who suspected what was going on and went to check on the couple.
