Well, isn't this just the pot calling the kettle black?
A prominent lawyer known for his work to stamp out sexual harassment is himself now being sued by an actress he represented for, you've guessed it, sexual harassment.
The complainant is a 25-year-old woman who goes by the name Chino. The stage actor wants the 47-year-old Izutaro Managi disbarred and is seeking ¥11 million in damages.
Managi has spoken in the National Diet on the issue of harassment and frequently appears in the media to discuss the problem in the theater and movie business.
In 2018, Chino set up a support ...
Crime in 2022: Stalking and revenge porn on the rise in Japan
March 6, 2023
/ Tadashi Anahori
Japan is famous for its low crime, but it depends on what kind of crime and how you measure things. And it doesn't mean that crime is not on the rise in certain areas.
According to recent media reports, child abuse cases continue to climb, with police recording 2,181 in 2022 (up from 2,174 the previous year) -- a new record.
Stalking cases are also at a record high, the National Police Agency said on March 2, as were domestic violence consultations, though there was a slight fall in the number of DV cases in which the police took action or made an arrest. (It should be noted that the ...

Gravure photographer Seiichi Nomura recently sat down for an interview with Aera.dot in which he looked back on his five-decade-long career, during which he has photographed countless numbers of idols, actresses, models, and singers.
"I've done more than 400 hundred photo books and thousands of covers for weekly magazines," Nomura estimates.
Originally an interior photographer, Nomura got into gravure by necessity: he needed the money. In the summer of 1976, at the age of 25, he traveled to Europe. After he returned, though, he was told by his clients that he had been away too long and they ...
Survey shows (older) Japanese women expect their date to pay for everything

Somewhat strangely and belatedly, this has become a controversial topic this month.
The popular porn star Eimi Fukada had to backtrack with an apology after she attracted opprobrium for asserting that men should pay for women on dates, since the latter investing a lot of time and money into preparing for the date.
And then former AKB48 idol Mai Oshima weighed in, saying during a livestream on her YouTube channel that she wouldn't go to a party or dinner where the guys weren't paying.
Japanese dating app Omiai conducted a poll in August 2022 of 217 men and 247 women -- all of whom have a ...
Japanese netizens go wild for AI cosplayer art
February 24, 2023
/ Tadashi Anahori
It seems that everyone is using AI these days to make art, photos, and even essays. The results are often very impressive. Perhaps even worrying.
But here's some AI that's really worth getting excited about. Kanyon Industries, which seems to be based in Hong Kong, posts examples of AI art featuring sexy cosplayers -- all digitally rendered, of course.
Heavily influenced by Japanese sources, it was inevitable that the results would strike big among Japanese netizens (as in, almost 31 million views and counting for this one tweet).
People say that AI still struggles with hands but ...

Japan mulls raising national age of consent from 13 to 16

/ Tadashi Anahori
The national age of consent in Japan is 13 -- an age that many find surprisingly low.
Japan is mulling raising the age of consent, according to media reports. A justice ministry panel last Friday proposed a major overhaul of sex crime legislation that would include raising the age to 16, along with clarifying rape prosecution requirements and criminalizing voyeurism (strangely, it's currently not illegal to secretly film someone for sexual purposes).
This is not a new discussion. There are regular calls to raise the age of consent in Japan, which has not changed since 1907. In 2019, a ...
Female volunteers needed for penis worship parade at annual Japanese fertility festival

The fertility/harvest festival held annually at Tagata Shrine in Komaki, Aichi, isn't as famous as the Kanamara festival, held near Tokyo, but is another example of an ancient Shinto event in which phallic objects abound.
Like with Kanamara, the Tagata Shrine honen festival makes for some very photogenic moments where a giant phallus newly carved from cypress is paraded around on March 15. This is led by the Shinto shrine's priests in all their finery. Women in robes also walk around holding smaller phallus objects.
Festivals are also about making money for the shrine, and Tagata Shrine, ...

A 54-year-old Japanese man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering an ex-music idol.
Police in Fuchu arrested Akira Ishikawa on February 3 for killing a 24-year-old former idol called Sana Hirabayashi at a hotel in the city in the west of Tokyo by stabbing her neck.
Security camera footage captured the two entering the hotel at 2 a.m. on the morning of February 2. Ishikawa then left alone about four hours later. The hotel became concerned when Hirabayashi had still not emerged from the room by 1:30 a.m. on February 3 and couldn't be contacted. They called police, who found her in the ...

There are peeping Toms and then there are peeping Toms. And these guys didn't do things by half measures.
Shizuoka police have arrested a gang of peeping Toms who have been active for 30 years -- yes, three whole decades! The 13 voyeurs, including the 50-year-old leader, were apprehended in recent months, while a further three others connecting to the filming (including a doctor) have now been referred to the prosecutors.
Active since he was 20, the leader alone claims to have filmed over 10,000 people without consent at locations all around Japan (with the exception, for some reason, of ...
