Divorced single mom Yui Imaizumi returns to entertainment industry

Yui Imaizumi has announced that she is returning to the entertainment industry.

At the height of her fame and popularity in early 2021, the former Keyakizaka46 cutie announced she was pregnant and married to YouTuber Mahoto Watanabe. She was just 22 and he several years older.

But then the problems started, with revelations the Watanabe had been grooming a 15-year-old and that he was arrested in 2019 for allegedly beating up a previous girlfriend.

In March 2021, Watanabe was arrested on suspicion of violating the child prostitution and pornography law (because he had asked the schoolgirl to send him lewd photos), and promptly announced his retirement (his management agency dropped him in January).

Imaizumi ultimately announced her retirement from the entertainment industry in October 2022. In January 2024, it became public that she and Watanabe were divorced. She is now 26 and a single mom of two kids.

Watanabe is earning a crust by working as an editor for another YouTuber and has admitted to being violent toward Imaizumi.

While she did sexy shoots in the past, we suspect that Yui Imaizumi’s recent experiences, motherhood, and her general maturity will mean those are a thing of the past.

Other than an interview with Shueisha Online and accompanying photo shoot that was published on March 18, her only media work announced for now is an upcoming radio appearance on a local Shizuoka station.

    It’s good for Yui that she continues with her radio show.
    Mr. Tadashi Anahori: I read a few years ago that Watanabe beat Yui and then she divorced him.

    @Mr. Gutierrez

    Yes, that’s mentioned in the article.

    Sorry, it was my mistake.
    Mr.Tadashi Anahori :
    What are the laws like in Japan? In the case of Yui’s ex-husband, would he continue to pay child support for their two children until they come of age? Would Yui receive compensation for the beating her ex inflicted on her? How much yen would the compensation be?

    @Mr. Guiterrez

    No problem and thanks for the questions. Perhaps another reader will know better than us, but this is our understanding. The situation in Japan is a bit complicated. In theory, she could sue her husband for assault (assuming the police did not pursue a criminal prosecution) but this would be long and expensive for her, and such lawsuits in Japan rarely result in high amounts of compensation (people tend to pursue lawsuits for moral rather than financial reasons). He would be obligated to pay child support until their children reached the age of adulthood, but Japan has had an issue with enforcing this, and many single mothers ultimately end up carrying most of the financial burden. It sounds like her ex-husband is also not gainfully employed, so hopefully Yui’s return to the entertainment will be lucrative for her.
