Popran, a new Japanese movie about a flying penis

There are weird films. And then there are weird films.

Japanese cinema has previously produced such masterpieces as the Hentai Kamen. And now comes the latest offering from Shin’ichiro Ueda, the director of sleeper hit One Cut of the Dead.

From the poster and trailer, Popran appears to be a comedy-horror film about a penis that apparently detaches itself from a man’s body and flies around, hitting and killing people.

Yes, it’s Attack of the Killer Flying Cock.

As if there weren’t enough things to fear in the air right now with the new variants threatening to deplete the Greek alphabet.

Since the interpretation of Japanese obscenity laws usually means censoring the depiction of male genitalia (and harsh penalties for those who break these rules), it will be interesting to see how they get around that here. Perhaps the penis is so fast that it never needs to be shown. A flying patch of mosaic pixels might be even scarier than a flying cock.

The movie, which stars Yoji Minagawa, is a guaranteed cult classic yet bound to set the nation back a few notches on the Wacky Japan media scale if it gets an international release. It comes out in Japan on January 14, 2022.
