Reduced income from porn and prostitution forces Tokyo college student into compensated dating
The tabloid magazine Weekly Bunshun has published an interview with someone they give the alias Yuna Ishihara, who is apparently a 24-year-old student at Tokyo College of Music.
But she also appears in adult video and works at a soapland in Yoshiwara, Tokyo’s long-established red-light district in the east of the city.
But due to the pandemic, her income of ¥900,000 (around $9,000) a month has massively decreased, leading her to take up papakatsu.
As reported before, this is a euphemism for compensated dating with older men (sugar daddies). The principle is hardly new but the term has acquired currency in recent years.
She was making as much as ¥300,000 ($3,000) monthly from doing two or three porn shoots, and the rest she picked up from busy shifts at the soapland, providing intimate services to male patrons. That took a big hit due to the pandemic.
She actually started her studies at Tokyo College of Music a little later than most, enrolling two years ago after saving up several million yen from working in her regional hometown at a snack bar and in an office.
She was already decided to earn money through adult video industry, so had plastic surgery done for that express purpose.
Given her recent professional experience, papakatsu is hardly shocking. She has been doing it for three months and says she earns ¥5,000 for just a 30-minute meeting, and ¥10,000 to share a meal together. On a busy Saturday, she might meet five men like this. She is particularly popular because she writes on her profile that she appears in porn.
She claims she only sleeps with men after they have got to know each other and “become friends.” She then charges ¥50,000 ($500) for a session.

Unfortunately we don’t know. The article uses a pseudonym for the interviewee, which may ring some alarm bells about the veracity of certain details (since if she’s not famous or established enough to have a regular performer name in AV, her fees would conventionally be quite low, but she claims she was getting relatively high fees for her appearances).
